2018 Ballot's Saucer scallop (Ylistrum balloti) survey results - Summary

Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Queensland, (2018) 2018 Ballot's Saucer scallop (Ylistrum balloti) survey results - Summary. Project Report. State of Queensland.

In 2018 a fishery independent scallop recruitment survey was conducted along the Queensland east coast from Double Island Point to Yeppoon. The objective of the survey is to produce an index of the relative abundance of 0+ and 1+ scallop age classes that can be compared with previous surveys. 18 survey strata consisting of 333 sites were sampled over 29 nights using commercial shallow water prawn gear. Data was adjusted using generalised linear models (GLM) to derive mean scallop densities. The findings of the 2018 survey provide:

• That 12 of 16 strata are able to be directly compared, showing an increase in mean densities from 2017 to 2018. Two strata were modified or added for 2018’s survey.
• That 5 of the 6 SRAs show an increase in mean total scallop density compared with 2017.
• There were 4 strata that show a decrease in mean total scallop density.

The analysis also shows:

• That data collected from contemporary surveys (2017 and 2018) can be compared with surveys conducted from 1997 to 2006.
• The effect of introducing TEDs and BRDs to the survey gear show no significant differences in catch rates compared with surveys where these were absent.

The data collected in 2018 will contribute to the formal stock assessment of the stock, which is due to be released in 2019.
