Current systems for clearfell residue and understorey vegetation management during second rotation site preparation are described, and their deficiencies briefly outlined. A number of options for retaining residue on hillslopes during site preparation are presented, and their potential for use in steep-country forestry, based on preliminary trials, is assessed.
